 വികസനം എങ്ങനെ എന്നതിനെക്കാൾ എന്താണ് യഥാർത്ഥ വികസനമെന്നതാണ് പ്രധാനമായി ചിന്തിക്കേണ്ടത്. കാലങ്ങളായി നമ്മൾ അനുവർത്തിച്ചു പോരുന്ന വികസന സങ്കൽപ്പത്തിലൂടെ ഇനി ഏറെ നാൾ മുൻപോട്ടു പോകാനാവില്ല എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവിന്റെ പാതയിലാണ് വികസിത രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾ. ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥകളെ( പ്രകൃതി) യും പ്രകൃതിവിഭവങ്ങളെയും കരുതലോടെ കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിച്ചാലല്ലാതെ മനുഷ്യനുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്കൊന്നിനും ഇനി അധിക നാൾ നിലനിൽപ്പില്ല എന്ന തിരിച്ചറിവിലെങ്കിലും അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന പച്ചപ്പ് കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിൽ നാം പ്രാധാന്യം നൽകിയെ തീരു. വികസനമെന്നത് സാമാന്യമായി പറഞ്ഞാൽ ചിരസ്ഥായിയായ ഒന്നല്ല. പ്രകൃതിവിഭവങ്ങളെ ആധാരമാക്കിക്കൊണ്ടുള്ള ഒരു സങ്കൽപ്പമാണത്. ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ പകുതിയിൽ അതായത് 1960-നു ശേഷം പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച മുതലാളിത്ത വികസന നയം പരിസ്ഥിതിയിൽ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന പ്രശ്നങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി മനസ്സിലാക്കി തുടങ്ങിയതിനു ശേഷമാണ് വളരെയേറെ വിമർശനവൽക്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. 



വികസനത്തിന്റെ മൂല മന്ത്രമായ സാമ്പത്തികവളർച്ച എന്ന വാദഗതി അടിസ്ഥാനപരമായി തന്നെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യുന്നുവെന്ന നിലയിൽ വികസനത്തെ രണ്ടു ഘട്ടമെന്ന രീതിയിൽ വീക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. ആദ്യത്തേത് പരിസ്ഥിതി അവബോധമുണ്ടാകുന്നതിനു മുൻപുള്ളതെന്നും, അതിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ഘട്ടമെന്നും. രണ്ടാമത് പറഞ്ഞ വീക്ഷണഗതിയിലൂടെ നോക്കിയാൽ വികസനമെന്നത് പ്രകൃതിയെയും പരിസ്ഥിതിയെയും ബാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു എന്ന നിലയിൽ കാണേണ്ടിവരും. അതായത് പ്രകൃതിവിഭവങ്ങളുടെ ശോഷണവും ജീവജാലങ്ങളുടെ നിലനിൽപ്പിനെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന, ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയുടെ തകർച്ചയെ ത്വരിതപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന പ്രശ്നവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് നിൽക്കുന്ന ഒന്നായി കാണേണ്ടിവരും. ചുരുക്കി പറയുകയാണെങ്കിൽ വികസനം ആപേക്ഷികമാണ് എന്ന്. പ്രകൃതിയുടെ അഭാവത്തിൽ വികസനമെവിടെ? ആയതിനാൽ പ്രകൃതിയെ ചേർത്തുപിടിച്ചും സംരക്ഷിച്ചും കൊണ്ട് മാത്രമെ വികസനത്തിന്റെ പ്രഥമ ചുവട് എന്ന നവ സങ്കൽപ്പമായിരിക്കട്ടെ ഭാവികാലത്തിന്റെ വികസന മന്ത്രവും മുദ്രാവാക്യവും.
